It’s official: this year’s NYC Marathon was the largest yet, with a record 50,304 tired but exhilarated runners crossing the finish line in Manhattan’s Central Park. Over two million spectators clung to railings along the five-borough route to support friends and family competing in the endurance race, the usually frenzied city at a rare standstill.
Kenyan racers won both the male and female categories – Geoffrey Mutai overall in 2hr 8min 24sec, while his compatriot Priscah Jeptoo scooped the women’s prize in 2hr 25min 7sec. Geoffrey had form, winning the both the NYC and Boston Marathon in 2011; Priscah awarded silver in both the 2011 World Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games. At the other end was Zoe Koplowitz, an inspirational speaker afflicted by MS and diabetes, who completed her 25th NYC Marathon on crutches the following morning.

The main US event takes place on Friday 29 November, the day after Thanksgiving. Most Americans are off work, at home with family and in high spirits. Unsurprisingly, Black Friday is a hit with retailers and shoppers alike and is consistently recorded as the busiest shopping day of the year. However, customers and their habits change regularly. Companies need to adapt to stay on top.
